Emotional regulation refers to how we respond and control our big emotions. Emotional regulation helps an individual with identifying, processing and controlling emotions in various activities and situations. Emotional regulation impacts our ability to perform our activities of daily living. Children who have difficulty regulating their emotions may show signs of temper tantrums, emotional outbursts, and disruptive behavior resulting in social isolation and difficulty completing daily tasks. Being able to identify and use coping strategies allows children to be more successful in their daily functions.

  • Counting to ten
  • Drinking a sip of water

  • Asking for a hug
  • Asking for space
  • Using the 5 senses
  • Having a calm down corner

Emotional regulation is a journey and can be challenging for parents if it is not a skill you have mastered. Modeling this skill and showing your child how you use the tools can go a long way. They are watching and listening even if they don’t show mastery right away. Let’s be honest, as adults most of us are still working on mastering this skill!
